New architecture school 
in Aarhus

As background for the project we find the city of Aarhus, which has proposed the realization of an architecture school, which is currently in a building that was not intended for this purpose, and so, its facilities.

The site given is an industrial plot, an old unloading yard for freight trains. A series of marks and prints have been left to characterize and define the place:

     - The old hangar where the trains arrived, has now become a cultural center, which gives space to workshops and studios. Godsbanen, is a building interspersed within the unnload yard, which has improved this use.
     - A series of customs buildings, spontaneously converted by Bureau Detours, create a neighborhood of workshops and ateliers called the INSTITUT FOR (X), which have settled both in customs buildings and in containers.


The current position of the city regarding this plot is based on the demolition of the INSTITUT FOR (X) neighborhood, to have the space for the construction of the new architecture school.

The idea of the project, therefore, is to go against this initiative, and try to maintain the area intervened by the INSTITUT FOR (X), which, carried out in line with the place, integrates and highlights the potential of the plot and its industrial character.

The project to be carried out will be phased, with a first catalyst. As a generating idea, it starts from the old train tracks that populated the plot. Picking up this idea, an axis is made, which crosses the plot lengthwise and will be evidenced by a train hangar, through which a material transport system runs. The tracks are connected to an existing recycling center, converted into a factory, which will collect leftover materials derived from the maintenance of the railways and that will result in a reduction in the cost of future projects and the environmental impact during the work by minimizing transport.

The hangar is intended as a distribution network, and connection between projects carried out in later phases, in which all the elements that appear are integrated. For all this, the hangar is thought of as a plug, to which a series of plug-ins will be connected that will give meaning to the project, thereby creating an infrastructure at a neighborhood level.

As the first plug-in, we find NEW AARCH, the new architecture school of Aarhus, an important piece for the rest of the project to be carried out. It will fill the site with a constant flow of students and teachers that will populate, not only the school, but the rest of the plot together with the INSTITUT FOR (X).

In this way a container is generated, a free and open space, where you can explore. A changing and flexible space that allows adapting to what it contains. Scenarios that are already diverse in an architecture school and give the possibility to house others. Free plans linked to a spirit of movement.   

The school is placed so that all the exposed conditions are considered. It is sunk in the ground and above a huge pool that would channel and store water in case of flooding.

It is connected to the hangar by three towers, which will be used both as vertical communication elements, as material transport, with a central tower, which replaces the stairs with a forklift associated with the hangar and thanks to a crane system and of mobile platforms will make the movement of materials efficient.

In constructive terms, the building tries to maintain the same industrial air, and use materials such as polycarbonate and textures that are in line with the construction process that will be of vital importance, establishing a system that functions as an assembly line or

A free plan that is achieved thanks to a structure of cable-stayed trusses -based on the Pompidou center by Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano-, which functions as an infrastructure.

As thermal and sustainability factors, an integrated system is committed, ranging from the building's globality; with a double skin system, which generates an air chamber, tempered air that will be taken to the treatment units, passing through the covering and materials, betting on the use of a polycarbonate with a high transmittance. And even passive systems and renewable energy such as geothermal energy or wind energy.
